India Votes 2024

India’s 2024 general election sees nearly 970 million people eligible to cast their ballots in a multiphase voting cycle from April 19 to June 1. Elections in the world’s most populous country are staggered in seven phases across 28 states and eight union territories, with around 1 million polling stations spread across teeming metropolises and remote hamlets. Voters elect 543 MPs to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament. The party with the most seats forms a government for a five-year term. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a rare third term in office and is the frontrunner in an uneven contest pitting the Hindu nationalist incumbent against a broad alliance of weakened opposition parties.
