Israel-Hamas war

The Palestinian movement Hamas that rules the Gaza Strip launched a series of coordinated attacks in southern Israel on October 7, 2023, killing more than 1,100 people and taking at least 250 others hostage. The attacks sparked a new war between Israel and the Islamist movement, with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu launching a devastating bombardment of the enclave. Almost 2 million Gaza residents have since been displaced, many of them multiple times, and more than 40,000 Palestinians have been killed so far, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Israeli authorities believe some 105 hostages remain in Gaza but estimate that around a third have already been killed.
