Congolese forces lose the town of Matembe in North Kivu to advancing M23 fighters. Fighting flares up once again in the wake of Sunday's scuppered peace talks in Angola between the leaders of Rwanda and DR Congo.

Leaders of the West African regional grouping ECOWAS have approved the withdrawal of three military-ruled countries from the bloc, but have offered a six-month grace period for them to reconsider. Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger plan to withdraw from ECOWAS in January after refusing the bloc's demand to restore democratic rule.
